It’s offically mid-May and we’re finally getting some nice weather. Can’t believe a week ago I was freezing at baseball. I’m feeling odd this morning and I can’t pin it down. My workout was slow - cardio again was tough - and I’m stuffed up. It could be allergies or a cold. I’m not really sure. Whatever it is, I feel like a bit of a wreck. I haven’t been sleeping lately and I think its the result of taking some allergy medication at night. I get a bunch of quality sleep for about 4 or 5 hours and then I’m tossing and turning all night. I took 2 melatonin’s last night and that could also be a reason why I’m struggling. The good news is that I can get into bed early tonight and go for a decent night’s sleep. Hopefully this allergy/cold thing goes away soon.
I going to try a coding lesson again today. The last one failed miserably. The key is to have the program work properly!
Workout:
5k row
2 mins hard on bike x 3
3 x 8 deadlift
2 x 12 sandbag clean
3 x 6 DB complex (bench press included)
3 x 10 bar jumps

Half way through May. It’s looks like it’s going to turn out to be a decent day today. Honestly 15C is amazing for me. Just enough to take the chill off the day. Our backyard is great at this temperature because it’s so protected by the wind.
I had another shitty sleep. It’s too bad because my new CPAP setup is great. I slept like a rock from 9:30 to 3 am when Charlotte woke me up. I had to get up for the washroom and after that my stuffy nose made it difficult for the CPAP to work. I’m still struggling to determine whether or not it’s a cold or allergies. Whatever I blew out this morning was dark which makes me think it’s likely a cold. Hopefully I get a break over the weekend for a rest. Once this afternoon hits it will be smooth sailing for a few weeks. Next week is a shortish week and then into a long weekend. Ahh this is entry is becoming so much about rest! Can you guess what’s on my mind?!
I woke up at 5:15 (well, 3:15 as per above) and decided that it was a yoga day. Did some Crossfit this morning and feel decent. I like these deload days and should incorporate them more regularly. The Yoga makes for a nice end of a workout session.
Workout:
30 mins yoga
2k row 5 thrusters every min on min
15 cal on bike/ 15 back rows x 3

Terrible sleep but wonderful workout. I woke up with a headache and determine it to be the result of not using my CPAP or using my CPAP under stress. I’ll need to investigate why that happens and figure out a way to use it with a stuffy nose. There has to be a suggestion. My back felt great considering I put pressure on it yesterday. That makes me feel better because it indicates that it’s likely not a serious injury.
Did tons of work on my genetics yesterday. A couple of interesting points: 1. The analytics of the genome are undoubtably accurate. The science in determining the result is essentially foolproof. 2. Nobody really knows how the diet/exercise genes get expressed in the context of nutrigenetics. This means that although I may not be made for a high-fat diet, it may work because of environmental situations. This is very fascinating and offers some insight for experimentation into both diet systems. The secret is to keep detailed notes on the progress of the diet and record any blips that might be related to genetics. My first gut instinct is to try the low fat diet as my genome suggests. This to me is the most appropriate way to begin. A diet rich in vegetables with minimal refined carbs and low fat seems the most appropriate. The bonus is that beer won’t kill my gains as they say. Much work to be done on this though!
Workout:
5k row
2 mins hard on bike
3 x 10 power cleans
3 x 10 one arm rows
3 x 25 KB swings
3 x 10 bar jumps

Great run this morning. Its was painful at the end, but no back pain. I’m wondering if the Tuarine is helping at night. I had some weird chest pains early in the night but was able to get back to sleep. I felt that sleeping on my side helped, but I’m not sure how to gauge my overall sleep. I’m going to look at getting a cover for that other mask which I find to be much more manageable. I don’t mind the nose plugs, it’s mostly that stupid tubing that really bugs me. It’s too long!
I’ve had some thoughts about racing up the corporate ladder over the last week. I think that the need to get into a position of administration is more of a want than a need. There’s no indication that my skill set will transfer well. I still would like to talk to the leadership here, but really I’m happy with my current role and should look to expand it that way. The brainwave of yesterday was trying to get a spot where I can speak regularly in front of the audience here at HTS. I just am nervous about overstepping my bounds. I feel like I should at least mention it to Father C to see what he thinks. That’s really where my dreams, goals and aspirations are. Anything else is just an indirect pathway.
Workout:
22 min run
3 x 500 row
3 x 50 double unders
3 x 8 heavy bag lifts
3 x 8 heavy bag lift and turn
3 x 7 db complex
3 x 12 bag cleans

Good to workout early again. I always feel so good about the day when I get that workout done early. Sleep is becoming a slight concern again. I keep waking and noticed that my apnea was over 1. Usually it’s below 0.5. I’m also finding that I prefer to be on my side more. I really should investigate getting a cloth protector because that other mast was really comfortable. It could be nostalgia because I slept so well those first couple of weeks. I feel rested when I wake up, but its hard to tell because I’m generally tired when I wake but feel great after a workout. The real clues come with afternoon fatigue which seems to have disappeared. I will keep an eye on it this week (especially the early mornings) to see how it translates. Hopefully it will be fine. That other mask scares me because I still have a red mark from using it.
Cramping is an issue. My back was really under pressure during this mornings run. I was able to persevere, but goodness I hope it’s not a long term thing. Tomorrow I’ll try some Taurine to see if it helps alleviate the pressure. Drinking lots of water is another goal to help with the cramps too.
Things are starting to lighten up on the workload front too. I’m able to catch a breath and focus in on the class work. I read an interesting quite from BJ Miller yesterday about life - “Work hard at the playfulness and relaxation in life.” I like that idea because we focus so much on making life happen when in fact we need to sometimes appreciate the small ‘snowball’ moments.
Workout:
22 min run
3 x 500 row
30s hard on bike
3 x 8 clean and press
3 x 10 one arm rows
3 x 30s - 40s medicine ball holds

It’s a cold, but bright morning out there. I’m excited for warmer weather. Looks like it may arrive next week. So I found out my 23andme results. It was kind of sort of anti-climatic. I turn out to be much more British than anticipated and only have a small portion of scandinavian. The rest is western European which could be Dutch, German or even Danish? The health markers came back fairly positive too. Although once I ported my results to Promethese, I’m getting conflicting information. I’m going to spend some of my free time organizing and cross referencing from other websites to figure out the best course of action with regards to fitness and diet. It’s going to take some work.
I’m very glad that hockey is done. I’m sick of getting short sleeps on Sunday and waking completely tired. I had a massive cramp last night - it was painful, probably the most painful I’ve ever had. It’s like due the lack of minerals and I do feel slightly better after the ZMA treatment. However, I’m still sore as anything.
Looking forward to upgrading my bike. I think it will be a fun exercise. It’s so much more enjoyable to ride something I’ve created than just buying a bike even though all the signs point to that as being the best way to go.
Workout:
25 min elliptical
Deadlift
Leg press
Tri pull downs
pull-ups
*Chest work

It’s May 5th, it’s cold and it is POURING rain. There is likely going to be flooding in the city today. Luckily we’re up high here in Richmond Hill so flooding is unlikely. I suppose if you want to find some good in this one could imagine the importance of this rain for the summer. Having higher levels of water will protect against any drought should we get a hot and dry summer. Also, it’s nice to know that the good weather is coming, and soon. Hopefully by the long weekend in May we’ll be back up to reasonable temperatures. I feel like last year we went out in the boat for a tour too.
I got my bond cashed and am going to likely invest in repairing and rebuilding my bike along with purchasing a pedal boat. I think those two items would make my mom happy.
I slept better last night, but having Charlotte up sort of broke my sleep up. There’s no question that I’m getting better sleep this days. The problem now is just getting to bed on time. I say this a lot, but hopefully things will begin to wind down shortly.
I have my meeting today. I’m still apprehensive about how to approach it. I don’t want to come off as overbearing because I am happy in my job and still find challenges. It’s more about the next step and being able to offer my skillset elsewhere. I feel like I have plenty to offer and would make a decent leader. It helps to be able to watch people closely on how they manage their leadership. Picking out the good and bad make it easy. The challenge that I have is 1. I still want to be on the front lines in the classroom 2. I need to minimize the amount of administration that I do 3. I’m not sure that what I’d like as a vision of leadership matches the others.
Workout:
I took today off. It’s apparent that I need a break and some time for my body to deload.

Hello World! Coding yesterday. What a gong show in terms of traffic, but I did get a few nuggets out of it. I’m definitely going to try the swift language with them. I will introduce the coding by using Turtles in Minecraft. This has the potential to be worth it!
I consumed way too much caffeine yesterday. It kept me going, but goodness 2 energy drinks, multiple coffees. ZaaZing!
Today I have a couple observations, but need to get to the bank and get the cheques cashed and bond deposited. I’m excited to rebuild my bike. I need to make sure that I have a step by step guide to doing it though. Lots of photos and and research. Could be a fun activity though. Also need to figure out where it can get done - garage? Backyard? Basement?
I managed to get 7.5 hours sleep last night. I don’t feel that bad either. This afternoon will be telling.
Workout:
5k row
3 x 2mins hard on bike
3 x 7-8 power cleans
3 x 20 back rows
3 x 12 bag cleans

Had to drop Henry off this morning. It wasn’t crazy, just adds an extra 25 mins to my day. Also, traffic. Boo. That’s the reason I’m not looking forward to tomorrow. Once I’m there it will be fantastic. Even the drive out to the west end won’t be terrible because I’ll have plenty of time. Traffic. I wonder why I’’m not a good traffic person. I hated it in sales, but even then it wasn’t as painful as I experience today.
My workout was great, but buddy’s smoke is a huge issue. It’s not happening daily and I’m not certain on how to deal with it. I don’t want to be the prick neighbour, but honestly a small change would benefit me. I can try to write a letter, maybe that will help. I don’t know. Every day is killing me though.
I have a meeting to discuss things with the big boss this week. I’m really at a loss for discussing my future. I’m not sure where to go with it. I”m really enjoying teaching, but want to reach out in a leadership position. Hopefully she’ll give me some insight as to how to approach it appropriately.
A couple of ideas:
- Start my own initiative here - a HTS M. Ed where people who are interested can work on interesting projects related to HTS. I could possibly see if release time could be made. These people would meet and discuss their projects and initiatives as a school. Continue to expand this idea - I like it.
- Ask to head an iterative that she’s thinking about. Perhaps something that could be beneficial to all the school. The goal here is to own the leadership aspect. Get ideas as to how I can set it up.
Workout:
22 min run
3 x 500 row
30s hard on bike
10 clean and press
25 kb swings
10 one arm press

It’s my anniversary today! 7 years. I remember it was a really nice day, but it’s cold and rainy today.
Now that May has arrived, school is going to start moving quicker. It’s a busy month and as the weather turns nicer (!) I’ll be able to spend more time outdoors with the kids. I’m not really looking forward to this Wednesday. I want to do the coding, but just can’t stand the idea of having to drive downtown. I’ll have to get up extra early so that I can leave by 7 because it will take me a godforsaken long time to get there if I leave any later. Last time I left at 6:45 and was there in no time. I also need to find a better spot to part too.
Can’t wait for hockey to be over because I can start getting up Monday mornings to workout. It’s such a pain to have to plan my day around other classes to make sure that I can get a workout in. It also eats away at my day, making it much more difficult to get things done.
The goal this week is to make it until Friday without any alcohol. I need to remember Jocko when the cravings hit. It’s really going to be on Wednesday night that will suck because softball is so associated with beer. It’s only one week though!
Workout:
elliptical
deadlifts
tri pull downs
leg press
